Harlan Community has won more Iowa high school football State titles than any other program in the state. Time will tell how good the 2017 Cyclones are, but on Friday night at Linduska Field in Jefferson they were too much for a young Greene County team to stay with. The Cyclones won 41-7 to even their record at 1-1 while Coach Mitch Moore’s Rams fell to 0-2. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The Cyclones needed just 1:33 of playing time to get on the scoreboard when converted wide receiver Brett Sears found Nick Foss for a 48 yard touchdown pass. Sears moved to quarterback for this game due to a previous injury for returning starter Deren Schmitz. Sears threw two more first half TD passes to Kevin Campbell, one for nine yards and another for three. Foss scored on a 19 yard run and the Cyclones led 27-0 at intermission. Two more third quarter TDs put the game into continuous clock mode with a margin of 35 or more points at halftime or later. Foss scored on a run of five yards, followed by a Jared Moser TD run of six yards.

Greene County’s lone touchdown came with 2:36 left in the game when reserve quarterback Brent Riley found Jordan Patterson on fourth and six from 22 yards out. Brazilian foreign exchange student Leo Marques kicked the extra point.

Harlan out gained the Rams 311-157 with 238 of the Cyclones’ total coming on the ground.

Riley had 77 passing yards with five completions in 11 attempts and Colby Kafer led the Rams in rushing with 61 yards. Patterson was the top receiver for the Rams with 62 yards on three catches.

There were 20 accepted penalties on the night and other infractions were declined. Harlan was penalized 11 times for 110 yards.

Turnovers were a problem for the Rams for a second straight game. After having three turnovers in week one vs. Kuemper Catholic, the Rams turned the ball over five times (three interceptions, two lost fumbles) on Friday night. The Cyclones had just one turnover and that came when Patterson recovered a muffed punt.

The Rams play on the road for the first time this season in their next game in Grimes vs. highly rated Dallas Center-Grimes on Sept. 8 on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Mustangs won 10-7 over Pella on Friday night, stopping a 42 game winning streak by the Little Dutch.
