Ben Kingery showed tenacity during the final few plays as he fought for first down yardage and carried ACGC to their first win in program history. The Chargers defeated the Des Moines Christian Lions 15-12 to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Kingery notched his second straight 100 yard performance and pulled a Houdini on his five yard winning touchdown. Logan Brinks added 55 yards on the ground, but struggled a little punting the ball.
Bryce Littler looked much more settled in the Charger pocket. While he recorded another interception, he made his mark early. Littler scored the first touchdown of the game on a beautiful 18 yard fade to Caden Wardyn on 4th down. Wardyn added 72 yards on four catches before the night was up.
For the Des Moines Christian Lions, the offense wasn’t much to roar about, but Ben Webster made his presence known, kicking four field goals, including a bizarre 45 yard free kick off a Quynton Younker interference penalty.
The six ACGC turnovers kept the Lions in the game, but ultimately the DMC offense couldn’t get past the Charger front seven. Late in the game, the winds of fate seemed to take a snap over Lion’s quarterback Jeff Herbers’ head, giving the Chargers a safety and securing their first win in program history.
ACGC heads to district opponent Missouri Valley on Friday. The Big Reds are 2-0 and defeated the Chargers last season 21-0. Be sure to tune in to the PM Sports Page Monday night for last night’s post-game interview with head coach Mark McDermott.
