The 38th annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival kicks off tomorrow, setting up a weekend of fun, entertainment, and produce.
The day will commence with the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn alumni golf tournament, which has tee times at 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the downtown area will be flooded with both people and corn for the annual “shucking of the corn” tradition. The Adel Chamber Partners have purchased six-and-a-half tons of sweet corn for the festival, and volunteers will come out in droves to help get it all ready for Saturday. Additionally, the Raccoon Valley Radio Big Red Radio will be at the shucking of the corn. We will play music for the attendees, as well as relay important information. Anyone can show up to help shuck, and water and beer will be provided for free.
The day will conclude with the Sweet Corn Festival Princess contest at 6 p.m. on the Adel stage. The contest is for girls in the ADM School District who are in 2nd-4th grades. Participants will be interviewed on stage, and then the winner will be drawn. There will be one winner and three runners-up. The bulk of the festivities will run on Saturday, and the Big Red Radio will be broadcasting live from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
