At the end of the 2016 volleyball season, coach John Jones wasn’t sure if he’d be coaching volleyball at least in 2017.
After leading the ACGC Charger volleyball team to it’s 4th winning season and one state meet appearance in five years, coach Jones will now enter into his 9th year of coaching with a new title as head coach of the West Central Valley volleyball team.
The journey to get to where he is now wasn’t necessarily an expected one, as coach Jones explained to Raccoon Valley Radio.
“I got my job which is a special education job in Redfield which is just nine miles from my house as opposed to 32 miles from Guthrie Center. I really wasn’t looking to leave (ACGC high school) and it had nothing to do with volleyball, just the distance from my house. So I got that teaching position and didn’t really think I’d be coaching but last week in June I got a call from the athletic director and long story short they needed a volleyball coach. I thought about it for 24 hours, talked about it with my wife and kids who were home and they said might as well do it,” stated coach Jones.
Coach Jones was quite torn in his decision to coach West Central Valley volleyball but in the end as he always does, coach thought about the students first.
“One reason I really didn’t feel like doing it (accepting the position) is because I really didn’t feel like coaching against the kids I just left but I thought about it and the kids need a coach and it’s not about me,” explained coach Jones.
Jones and the Lady Wildcat volleyball team will begin with first official practices on Monday.
