This coming weekend, Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center invites families for a day of fun before summer ends.

On Saturday, the park will be holding a series of programs, fun, and food. The day will kick off at 9 a.m. with kayaking on the lake. Attendees will learn basic safety and paddling techniques before the paddle. All equipment will be provided, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A craft program for children will be held at 10 a.m. at the gazebo, where kids will read “The Hungry Caterpillar” and make their own caterpillars to take home.

Later in the day, there will be a program about using GPS properly, which will start at 1 p.m. After that they will hold a demonstration of an atlatl, which is an ancient spear-like hunting weapon, at 3 p.m. The day will conclude with the smoker/Dutch oven contest and potluck at 6. Aspiring grill masters are encouraged to show off their skills in meat dish, side dish, and dessert categories. There will be prizes for each category, and participants can enter all three. Entries must be brought to the gazebo no later than 5:45 p.m. in order to be eligible.

There is no cost for the contest and potluck, though guests wishing to participate in the potluck must bring a dish to share.
