jake chapmanIowa lawmakers passed legislation this year that legalized fireworks and when they are allowed to be used.

District Ten Senator Jake Chapman says the first round of fireworks was from June 1st through July 8th. However, he points out that they allowed for local control within those parameters.

“What may be good for Guthrie County and Dallas County may not be good for the City of Des Moines. So we entrusted local officials to listen to their constituents and decide what they should do when it comes to the use of fireworks.”

The next round of fireworks will be from December 10th through January 3rd and Chapman notes one other difference for those looking for fireworks in the winter time.

“There are no temporary structure sales. So you will not see any tent sales during the month of December. The only retailers that can sell are permanent structures, so those are brick and mortar buildings. So I think there’s going to be a whole lot less selling going on.”

Chapman strongly urges all Iowans to consult their local government’s ordinance and regulations on fireworks ahead of December.
