“I couldn’t be happier for her!” Those were the first words from Greene County head softball coach Tom Kennedy when asked to comment about sophomore Megan Carey being named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Class 3A All-State third team. Carey is a left-handed slap hitter who batted .449 from the lead off position for the Rams. She scored 28 runs and was 24 of 24 stealing bases.
Kennedy added, “She did just a phenomenal job this year as our lead off hitter. She put the ball in play, was our spark plug, and just so consistent throughout the year. She’s well deserving of the honor and is just a sophomore, so we’ll look forward to two more years with her.” Carey had 98 official plate appearances and struck out just eight times.
Coaches from the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference voted Carey onto the second all-conference team. She made the Central Iowa All-District team from the IGCA prior to being named All-State. Carey will be a junior at Paton-Churdan High School.
The Rams were 10-20 this season and 2017 was the first season in the last 10 where the team lost more games than it won. Greene County rebounded from a 1-9 start to win nearly half its games in the last two-thirds of the campaign.
