The Iowa Games Archery competition has long had a Greene County flare to it, and 2017 was no exception. Decades ago, even before there were The Iowa Games, the late Olympic Gold Medalist Doreen Wilber and her husband Paul (Skeeter) of Jefferson, gave archery lessons to those interested. That tradition has been carried on by some of the former students of the Wilbers. Darcy Blackmer Gill, a former student of the Wilbers’ donated $250, which was matched by her employer, and that $500 was used to buy archery equipment. All students were provided equipment.
Don Orris and Phil Siglin donate their time as instructors. Beginners and Advanced archery classes were held again this year through the Jefferson Parks & Recreation Department. Students have the option of taking part in a two-day shoot at the Iowa Games and several from Jefferson and Greene County did just that.
Winning Gold medals were Wyatt Russell, Jax Carstensen, and Cheyenne Anderson. Silver medals went to Jayden Carstensen and Kaleb Fisher. Joe Anderson brought home a bronze medal.
