With summer sports officially in the rear view mirror, ACGC athletics now will have their focus squarely on the upcoming fall sports season.
It was a learning and growing experience for all three of the Charger fall sports last year. The Charger volleyball program came off a more than solid 15-12 season in 2016. The Lady Chargers enter their second year under the ACGC name retaining all but four from last year’s roster. With that ACGC volleyball brings back their top two performers in kills, assists, digs, aces and blocks. As ACGC volleyball does enter round two, they will be under new tutelage with new head coach Lyndsey Noe.
As for the ACGC football program, they had rough entry into not only their initial season under the Charger name, but a bumpy rise from 8-player football to 11-player football at the class 1A level. Although the Chargers weren’t able to snag a win in 2016, they did put up some very competitive games including the season opener against West Central Valley in a 12-19 nail bitter. The Charger football team also ended the season with a shootout against last year’s district champion Logan-Magnolia. They bring back their top tackles leader in Nate Schiller as well as two of their top four rushers and three of their top four receivers. The Charger football program will once again be under the guidance of coach McDermott.
Probably the biggest highlight of the inaugural fall sports season for ACGC would be on the cross country side of things. Head coach Collin Shawgo and both Charger boys and girls teams had solid seasons in 2016. The solid season for the Lady Chargers included the class 1A individual champion in Kate Crawford who comes back for her sophomore campaign in 2017. The boys come off a well rounded team season finishing third in the 1A state championships with 5 of their seven runners earning top 30 finishes. The Charger boys cross country program brings back four of their top seven performers.
