The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter of Dallas County is looking for two worthy recipients for their annual scholarships.
The organization is an affiliate of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Professional Women Educators. Since 2000, the organization has given two $500 scholarships to college juniors or seniors who graduated from Dallas County high schools. The applicants can be male or female, but they must be education majors. Nu Alpha Gamma Treasurer Maureen Becker is part of the four-person committee that decides who gets the scholarships. She explains what they’re looking for in applicants.
“We want students who we sense that they are hard working, willing to learn new things, try different ideas. Hard working, like teachers are, that’s how we will choose our students. When we read through the applications, we discuss them so we can get a couple people’s idea. ‘Well, it sounds like this person really was in every event that could be held. They were a part of it.’ Things like that. That gives us ideas about their leadership and their (willingness) to take on whatever comes next. And in teaching, we just have to do that. Just take what comes to us.”
Applications are due by July 31st, and recipients will be named in early August. To apply for the scholarships, contact Becker by email at mrgebecker@gmail.com, or by mail at 17473 J Avenue, Perry, IA, 50220.
