Niko RiceA Jefferson man faces felony charges from a domestic abuse incident.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says about 5pm Friday, July 14th, an incident occurred in the 400 block of East State Street. Twenty-three-year-old Niko Rice allegedly struck his girlfriend several times, causing injuries. He also reportedly took off his belt and put it around her neck to  choke her, and threatened to kill her.

Clouse notes that the couple were then seen leaving the apartment complex and a neighbor from across the street heard screaming. Rice allegedly went over to the neighbor and threatened her as well. Clouse says Rice went back inside and ingested prescription medications from the apartment. Rice then turned himself into the law enforcement center. Rice stayed overnight in the Greene County jail and was then transported by ambulance to a mental health facility in Council Bluffs. Clouse points out, Rice voluntarily committed himself. The victim was taken to a Des Moines hospital.

Rice was arrested Wednesday at the facility on warrants filed by the Jefferson Police Department. Rice was then transported back to the Greene County jail where he was charged with a Class B Felony for attempted murder, A Class C Felony for willful injury-causing serious injury, a Class D Felony for domestic abuse assault-impeding air/blood flow-causing bodily injury and a serious misdemeanor for second degree harassment.

He remains in jail under a $100,000 cash or surety bond.
