The entirety of the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area is under a heat advisory through Saturday.
Temperatures in the area are expected to reach the mid-to-high 90’s throughout the week, with heat indices as high as 110 degrees. Emergency management personnel recommend people to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. However, if being outside is a necessity, it’s recommended to stay hydrated with water or sports drinks, refrain from drinking caffeinated drinks or alcohol, use sunscreen, and take frequent breaks.
Children, animals, and the elderly are particularly susceptible to the heat, so it’s advised to monitor them closely to make sure they aren’t suffering from dehydration or heat stroke. Additionally, it’s not recommended to leave children or pets in vehicles for any amount of time. With the heat expected this week, the interiors of cars can reach temperatures as high as 120-130 degrees in a matter of 20 minutes, even with the windows down.
