The young adults summer reading program at the Perry Public Library has been well-attended this year, and participants should get ready for a busy July.
Deputy Library Director Misty VonBehren runs the teen program, and she says every week there’s a challenge, prizes, and a program. For the weekly Lego challenge, VonBehren says she rewards the winner with two free movie passes. There’s also candy prizes for people who compete in the trivia/Jenga crossover challenge. Then every Friday at 2:30 there is a special program, which go along with the theme of “Build a Better World.” The finale for the program will be held on Friday, July 28th, where participants will get to take part in a lock-in at the library. The event will feature an escape room, and they’ll also draw for the grand prize: a Kindle Fire.
VonBehren says the library staff enjoys coming up with creative ideas for the summer reading programs, and they start planning the September or October before. She says while they do get some help from the state library, most of their programs come from their own creativity. “We just kind of brainstorm between myself, and Mary (Murphy), and Suzanne (Kestel). We’ll just be sitting around the library, and just kicking ideas off of one another. We like to go along with the theme. It’s fun, and exciting, and we love this time of year.”
