Greene County stopped Woodward-Granger’s long winning streak to start the high school baseball season on Tuesday night at Granger. The Rams’ 8-0 non-conference victory evened the season record at 11-11 for coach Mark Sawhill’s team while the Hawks are now 25-1 after winning 25 straight to start the season. W-G is ranked number four in Class 2A by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association. The Rams scored two first inning runs and another in the second. A four-run fourth made it 7-0, and the final run was tallied in the top of the fifth.

Junior Ben Wilkins tossed a complete game shut out to improve to 4-2 on the season. Wilkins allowed just four hits and walked only one batter while recording five strikeouts and he did not hit anyone. W-G entered the game with a team batting average of .402 and has 15 games this season of scoring 10 or more runs. The Hawks had not scored less than four runs in any game this season until facing the Greene County right-hander.

The Rams had six hits off four different W-G pitchers with three of those going for extra bases. Trey Tucker hit a triple with doubles for Wade Adcock and Tom Gannon. Both Adcock and Gannon picked up a run batted in. Chase Stoline had two singles and Jordan Patterson had a base hit. Wilkins did not have a hit, but helped his cause with two RBI. Freshman Brandon Worley, the starting pitcher, took the loss for W-G.

The win was the fourth straight for Greene County and all four are against teams with winning records. This marks one of the few times a Ram team has ever won against a team that was 25-0. It’s rare for a high school baseball team to go this deep into a season without losing.

The Rams are off until hosting Class 3A number 10 Gilbert on Friday at Linduska Field in Jefferson on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
