Dallas County Habitat for Humanity is hoping to move a family into a brand new home in Perry next year, but first they have to find that family.

To that end, they are hosting a series of informational meetings at the Perry Public Library for anyone interested. Habitat Outreach Coordinator Omar Padilla says they already had one meeting in May, and their next one is tomorrow. The final meeting will be held this Saturday. He adds, “Our hope is to find a family that qualifies for the program and that we can start educating and preparing to purchase that home next year, and that we can start building that house here pretty soon.”

Padilla explains, they don’t want to waste anyone’s time by having everyone complete an application. Instead they invite people to the meetings to find out if they qualify and are committed to sticking with the program. He emphasizes that the houses they build aren’t free to the potential homeowners, but in many cases is their best option for purchasing a house.

“Habitat is a hand-up program, we’re not a hand-out program. What we do is we try to remove as many barriers in the way of people who want to become homeowners. And so we offer very, very affordable home mortgages. And through that mechanism we can help people get into homes, where they could not do it through the traditional means.”

Tomorrow’s meeting will be held from 6-8 p.m., while Saturday’s will run from 2-4 p.m. To hear more about Dallas County Habitat for Humanity and the informational events, listen to today’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
