Construction on North Street in Perry is nearly complete, and one of the last things the City needs to deal with is the placement of stop signs.
At the most recent Perry City Council meeting, they discussed an ordinance that would have a four-way stop at the intersections of North Street and 18th and 16th streets. However, the council members spoke to several citizens who had voiced their disagreement in needing four-way stops at the intersections. Most felt it would be best for 18th and 16th streets to be uninterrupted, and the Council tended to agree with them.
One of the reasons they felt four-way stops were unnecessary was the present lack of development in that area. City Administrator Sven Peterson said when drafting the stop sign ordinance, the City thought it would be best to have people get used to the four-way stops now rather than later.
In the end, though, the Council decided two-way stops on North Street would be sufficient for the time being. They had the first reading and amended the ordinance at their last meeting, and will have two more readings before it will take effect.
