June is recognized as National Rivers Month.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says an important asset for the County is the North Raccoon River that flows through it.

“We’re very fortunate to have 40-miles of that river running diagonally through the county with seven accesses. So any stretch is pretty accessible as far as you don’t have to float a half a day to get from one ramp to another, and that was our goal.”

As far as keeping the Raccoon River clean and free of contaminants, Towers doesn’t believe there are many of those issues in Greene County.

“It’s something that we definitely need to be aware of, and conscious of, and do testing and do everything we can to protect the watershed and the water that goes in there. But to me it’s still a great resource and I encourage everyone to take part in it.”

Towers reminds everyone that there are great fishing spots along the river, as well as opportunities for kayaking and boating.
