The Perry City Council will convene Monday evening in regular session.

One of the most important topics they will discuss is an ordinance relating to the recent legalization of fireworks in the State of Iowa. City Administrator Sven Peterson says to pass an ordinance, cities need to have three readings, which typically takes at least two meetings. However, with the timeframe for the sale and use of fireworks already upon them, they will be doing all three readings during Monday’s meeting. They are expected to prohibit the use of fireworks in the City, with the exception being July 4th.

Other topics on the agenda include a 28E agreement with Polk City for use of their firing range, a master agreement for professional services with airport engineering and construction services, consideration for the proposed donation of a sculpture, and two additional ordinances for animal control and protection, and urban chickens. They also plan to approve a three-year employment agreement with Peterson for him to continue as City Administrator.

Finally, they will set a public hearing regarding the relocation of a portion of the Raccoon River Valley Bike Trail to Perry-owned property. Tyson Foods is trying to create a truck turnaround area at their plant, but to do so they need to get an easement with Dallas County Conservation to relocate the section of trail at Tyson’s expense. Before they can do that, though, they need to get the permission of Perry to purchase the land. The Council will also discuss an easement between Tyson and themselves regarding the turnaround area.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Clarion Room of the Security Bank Building in downtown Perry
