A scoreless tie after two innings turned the wrong way quickly in the top of the third for the Greene County High School softball team on Friday night. Visiting North Polk (Alleman) scored seven runs in the third and cruised to a 13-2 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference victory in six innings by the 10-run rule over the Rams in the Greene County home opener in Jefferson. The Class 3A number 12 Comets improved to 3-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall while the Rams fell to 0-3 overall and in the HOIAC.
The Comets had 11 hits, including a two-run home run by senior Rebecca Rimathe, and they played errorless softball. The Rams seven hits, all singles, and were charged with five errors. NP scored twice in the fourth and four times in the sixth for their 11 runs, while both Greene County runs scored in the fifth inning on a two-run single by senior Hannah Promes.
Promes took the pitching loss and Jenna Beyers relieved in the fourth inning. Promes and freshman Izzy Bravard each had two hits while juniors Samantha Hardaway and Megan Durbin each had one hit, as did sophomore Megan Carey. Three of the Greene County hits were of the infield variety.
Sophomore Bailey Hougham pitched the first five innings and picked up the victory for the Comets. Sophomore Sami Swygman pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams face Class 4A number 13 Boone at 9 a.m. today in the first round of the Ogden tournament. Greene County is also scheduled to meet Madrid and Webster City in Ogden.
