Bacon is arguably America’s favorite food, but what you maybe didn’t know was that much of it comes from right here in central Iowa.

To help educate you on one of the area’s most popular exports, Perry’s Hometown Heritage organization is presenting a program called “All About Bacon” on Saturday, May 20th. Starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Carnegie Library, the event will be devoted to all things bacon. Chamber Director Bob Wilson says in addition to the opportunity to eat as much bacon as they can, attendees can also learn about the food during the presentations.

Leo Landis, also known as “The Bacon Professor” will lead one such presentation, where he’ll discuss the history of bacon and local lockers. Landis has been educating people about bacon for over 15 years, making appearances at just about every bacon festival possible. Wilson assures potential attendees it will be equal parts educational and delicious.

“We’re just going to have a good time, and celebrate this very unique food, but also learn about Iowa history. And that’s kind of what this whole Hometown Heritage mission is, is celebrating Iowa and its history. And not only that, but Perry specifically. May 20th, put it on your calendar. Tickets are $25, tons of bacon, you’ll eat more than $25-worth of bacon, so you’ll get your money back.”

Tickets are now available for purchase at the Chamber of Commerce or the Carnegie Library. Wilson advises people to get their tickets quickly, as there’s a cap of 75 people for the event.
