The new gun bill recently signed by Governor Terry Branstad made changes to the current law that has some law enforcement agencies raising some concerns.
One of the changes is only allowing certified law enforcement personnel to carry their firearm on school property. Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says that change can be troubling for smaller departments like his because newly hired officers can be with the department a full year until they become fully certified.
“That officer is not allowed to carry his firearm on school grounds. I think you can kind of see some issues that could arise in that. He’s allowed to carry it at the courthouse, he’s allowed to carry it anywhere else that his job duties take him but not on school grounds. That concerns me a little bit.”
Clouse adds that he’s heard lawmakers want to change that language, but will be unable to discuss it until next legislative session. Even though he doesn’t agree with some changes, Clouse thinks the new law overall is good for Iowans.
“I believe everyone, law abiding and does it legally and responsibly, should be able to own a gun and should be able to carry that gun. I just have fears once in awhile when we take some this language a little bit too far in one direction. I’m kind of more of a middle of the road kind of guy.”
