It’s National Telecommunicator’s Week this week and we highlight the jobs that law enforcement dispatchers do everyday to help individuals.

Pierre Kellogg is entering his ninth year as a Greene County Dispatcher and his eighth as a full-time employee. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that from his first day on the job through today, it has been the people he’s worked with that has been his favorite part of the job.

“The people I work with were awesome and they still are, I mean just everyone. I get to help people and I enjoy it. I’ve been a ham radio operator for 35 years now, so I love the radio aspect of it and the communications part. So that’s what I enjoy, the people and being able to help out.”

Kellogg works the midnight to 8am shift and even though he says it can be slow sometimes, he still wants to treat every call that comes in seriously.

“When you’re dealing with something serious, you have to be professional. I find that a calm, steady voice, especially to the caller, works the best. So I can get the information that I need to dispatch out the appropriate agencies.”

Every dispatcher has at their disposal the radio and communication system, computerized state system for warrants and driver’s license information, jail monitoring system, tornado siren controls, weather radar and the multi-line phone system including 911 calls.
