Iowa House File 517, a bill which makes many changes to individual gun rights in Iowa, is being debated on the senate floor. Among other measures the bill expands the definitions which govern how someone who feels threatened may defend themselves with a firearm. By changing language in the Iowa Code, it would give potential victims more leeway in firing on an attacker without being prosecuted. Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright is supportive of the change, but says the most important thing for Iowa gun owners is personal responsibility.
“If you make a decision with a firearm you must be prepared to accept the consequences of that decision. A big part of taking responsibility is being trained in the use of your firearm. If you get a license to carry you should know the law and spend some time at a range firing the weapon. Too many people buy a gun and then never actually use it. And that lack of knowledge can be dangerous to the owner and others.”
Sheriff Arganbright hopes that those who choose to own and carry a firearm will take the initiative and get educated about safety and use.
