When you think of the sport of golf, you normally don’t think of snow, ice, and cold temperatures; in fact, you think just the opposite.
Unfortunately in the world of high school golf, the luxury of nice weather conditions aren’t always awarded especially in the early goings of the season. Whatever the weather conditions are, the old adage continues “the show must go on” and if conditions are severe enough, coaches have to get a little creative with how they conduct practices. For the ADM Tigers and first year head golf coach Kelly Roder, they have set themselves up nicely with the use of updated facilities and equipment to combat all types of weather.
“Early in the year when it’s not conducive to play golf, we’ve got a nice indoor facility up in Minburn that we just completed last year. Nice putting green, three hitting bays, some other hitting areas, plus we can utilize the old gym up there. Got plenty of space to spread the kids around and still get in some good work which not a lot of schools have that so it’s a good luxury for us to have,” explained coach Roder
With the knowledge that Iowa can bring a wide variety of weather types, coach Roder told Raccoon Valley Radio he will have his golfers be ready for all kinds of weather.
“Obviously once we get into the season, as long as there’s not a safety issue with the weather we’re going to be out there. I tell the kids to pack for all different weather because we are in Iowa after all so as long as there’s not lightning in the air we can go ahead and golf,” stated coach Roder.
The first competition of the season for either Tiger golf team will belong to the Lady Tigers who start their season on Saturday, April 1st heading to Warrior Run Golf course in Norwalk to match up against a 6 team field beginning at 8:30 am.
As for the Tiger boys golf team, they won’t see their first meet action until Thursday, April 6th when they join the Lady Tigers in Nevada for a meet at the Indian Creek Country Club beginning at 2:00 pm.
