It’s been a season of firsts all around for ACGC athletics and with the spring sports season right around the corner, it’s time for the Charger track and field teams to join the mix.

Not only is it the first year under the ACGC Charger name, but it’s the first time both combined schools have had to participate in the class 2A track and field level. The cut off level to be considered a 2A school is at least 160 students and the Chargers have just made their way above that line coming in at just over 180 students.

Raccoon Valley Radio got the chance to sit down and talk about the transition with girls head track coach Dave Spratte.

“It is a difference and it varies from event to event. Some year’s 2A is stronger maybe across the board than 1A, but I can think of years where 1A has been better in events down there in Des Moines,” explained coach Spratte.

Coach Spratte also went on to talk about how facing 2A opponents is nothing new for his team.

“We run against 2A teams all the time in our area throughout the meet/track season so we’re just going to try and get better, get in the weight room, get in shape, and see what we can do,” stated coach Spratte.

The start to the 2017 season begins on the road today for coach Spratte and the Lady Chargers when they travel to Ames for the 24th Annual Iowa State Girls High School Classic. The meet will start with the long jump and the high jump at 3:30 pm.
