Two candidates are running in next week’s special election to fill a vacancy on the Greene County School Board.
Steve Fisher owns and operates a farm southeast of Grand Junction. He went to school at Beaver and graduated from Ogden High School. Following graduation, Fisher served in the military for two years and then attended Iowa State University, before coming back to the farm, where he’s been since.
He has served on several church boards, was on the Farm Bureau board, pork producers board and is currently the board president of Farmers’ Mutual Insurance. Fisher explains why he is running for Greene County School Board.
“I’ve always had a keen interest in education being married to a teacher. I’ve talked to a lot of people about what’s going on in the schools and I’ve got concerns about what’s going on in our schools. I was asked by several people from the east side of the County to represent the interests of the former East Greene District because of the school closing, there are some concerns with that being done properly.”
He would like to see more transparency, community response and accountability from the School Board. He adds that any board he’s served on before, he’s there as a representative of the people who put him on that Board.
Fisher has been married to his wife Patty for 20 years. Patty is a math teacher at the high school. Together, they have two school-age children, Nadia, who is a senior and Kale, who is a freshman.
