Now that the state tournament has officially concluded for all classes for Iowa high school girls basketball, every team can look back at their 2016-17 campaign and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
When head coach Drew Stonewall looked back at the season for the West Central Valley Lady Wildcats, of their many positive aspects from great shooting, solid defense, and exceptional rebounding, he told Raccoon Valley Radio that depth was actually their best.
“I’d say probably our depth. Though we had some injuries towards the end of the season. There were certain times in the season where we had 8, 9, 10 different girls score in a game and that says a lot about our depth and about how hard those girls worked. That was fun to watch so I think going into a certain day we never really knew who’s going to be our leading scorer or who’s going to be our leading rebounder, or who’s steals in a game. Any time you can have a lot of girls who can step up, it really helps,” stated coach Stonewall.
Coach Stonewall also mentioned that he feels that strength will still be such next season.
” I think that will be another strength of ours next season. We’ll certainly have a decent amount of depth and amount of girls that have experience,” explained coach Stonewall.
This season, the Lady Wildcats had four players score over 100 points, 4 players shoot over 40% from field goal range, 3 players with over 100 rebounds, and three players with over 30 steals.
