For nearly four decades, a tradition continues with real life, hands on, student learning at Greene County High School.
The Ram Restaurant was the brian child of Suzanne Seivers and for the last 17 years, food and nutrition teacher Donna Carhill has been in charge of it. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she was initially intimidated.
“First day was terrifying because it had such high expectations and I didn’t want that to fall. But I about had a nervous breaking down the first day we opened, but here we are and still going.”
Over the years, there have been changes, Carhill says they’ve added valet parking, catering and gluten-free items to their menu. One of the most important aspects of the Restaurant is that it allows students to work in the restaurant business and gives them hands-on experience.
“I want my students to always take ownership. I want them to say, ‘This is my week that I’m in charge. This is the food that I developed, to be proud of that, that all plays into that professionalism. If you’re excited about what you’re doing, if you have real ownership in it, I think it makes you want to do better.”
Junior Steven Coffin describes the benefits he’s received from working in Ram Restaurant.
“You get to communicate and work as a team. It gives you experience for real life because we do deal with the public. It’s made me a better cook. Before all I really knew how to do was like make macaroni and all of that. And now, I know how to make professional food.”
