The three Perry seniors will certainly remember this senior night for a very long time. The Jayettes buckled down and turned in one of their best defensive performances of the season in the final 6 minutes to rally past 11th ranked and conference leading Boone 40-39 Tuesday night in Perry. Johanna Diw’s two free throws with 7 seconds left proved to be the game winners. Trailing 39-38, Perry set up a play for Diw who made an athletic catch in heavy traffic and earned a foul and a trip to the free throw line. The junior calmly knocked in both free throws to give Perry the lead. Boone never got a shot off despite having time as Madlyn Danner’s pass sailed out of bounds allowing Perry to dribble out the clock.
It was the most impressive win of the season for Perry who was outsized badly in the paint. The Jayettes were giving up 4 to 5 inches in the two post positions.
“I’m getting used to it,” smiled senior Emma Olejniczak, who scored 9 points. “You just have to be physical and be quick with the help out defense and we were in the 4th quarter tonight.”
Diw led the Jayette offense with 15 points while 6-0 forward Chelsea Sandvig paced Boone with 18 points.
Grace Marburger, Maddie West and Olejniczak were all honored after the game during senior night introductions.
Perry denied Boone a shot to wrap up an unshared Raccoon River Conference title. The Toreadors are still in a position to the win the title but the loss opened the door for Ballard to earn a share of the crown as well.
The Jayettes return to action Friday night against RRC opponent Bondurant Farrar.
