The Greene County Supervisors are currently working on their budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
We’ve previously reported that the 2016 land valuations are in for the County, which is over $647 million. Supervisor Chair John Muir says the land valuations do play a role in determining the overall county budget.
“We look at the valuation and think, ‘Well this is what we have to work with.’ Everybody’s expenses go up and it’s how much can we follow that trend considering where we came from. We started with our valuation and we’ve got these many funds to work with, how much can we do?”
Another key aspect is that the County currently has no debt, which Muir says is like a private business, that if you don’t have funds to pay for something, that you can manage the funds properly.
“Same thing applies a little bit to government. In government, it’s even that much bigger of a decision because you’re talking a longer period of time, you’re talking a lot of people’s investment that you’re dealing with.”
The Supervisors are expected to submit their budget to the state by March 15th.
