Thanksgiving is tomorrow and sometimes the holiday season can bring potential fire hazards into a home.
Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams reminds everyone to make sure to keep any flammable materials such as potholders, towels and plates anyway from the oven, because they burn easily. He also describes what you should do if you are deep-frying a turkey.
“Make sure that you’re filling the container with water first and putting the turkey or ham in it to make sure that when you add it with the boiling oil it doesn’t overflow and catch fire. And always do that kind of stuff outside away from any structures.”
If you notice smoke coming from the oven, Williams recommends shutting off the oven and the smoke should suffocate any fire that might be inside and don’t open the door to prevent oxygen from getting to the fire which can make it worse.
As far as having a fire extinguisher in the house, Williams suggests putting it under the kitchen sink.
“Just in case you have something boiling or cooking on the stove and it catches fire. Then just make sure you shoot it above the fire and not directly into it because you’ll spread the fire if you shoot it directly into the oil that might be burning.”
Finally, if you need to use multiple outlets for your holiday meal, Williams adds that you should use a surge protector to prevent the outlets from catching fire.
