Media Day for the the Greene County High School wrestling team was held on Monday and a couple of things stood out. First of all, the numbers are better than a season ago, and secondly, the team is very young. Seventeen are out for the sport following a winless dual meet season in 2015-16 when the Rams never were able to fill more than seven of the 14 weight classes. Some nights they had as few as four contestants.
Head Coach Mark Sawhill told Raccoon Valley Radio it’s too early to tell exactly what weight classes everyone will be in, but he’s optimistic that the Rams will be able to fill a minimum of 10 weight classes most meets, perhaps more.
There are just four returning letter winners and only two are seniors. Hunter Ruth qualified for the 2015 State Tournament at 195 lbs. and Isaiah Yoder qualified for the District Tournament in 2016 at 160 lbs. Ruth could be at 195 or 220 while Yoder is likely to move up to 182.
Junior Cayden Gerdes and Isaac Ireland are the other two returning letter winners. Both lost more matches than they won last season, but are determined to improve their records.
Juniors without much in the way of wrestling experience are Caden Wilson, Brittan Gallagher, and Dale Morlan. Brock Wuebker missed his freshman season due to injury, but is back as a sophomore. Others in tenth grade are Garrett McDowell and Elisha Ward. Freshmen are Garrett Tasler, Joel Ward, Gage Michaelson, Will Hansen, Braden Gallagher, Owen Launderville, and Markus Rosenow.
