dayton stagecoach innThe Dallas County Conservation Board is working with Tallgrass Historians to find out more about the history of the Dayton Stagecoach Inn.

Two field days are scheduled for this weekend and volunteers are needed to help with the project.

Conservation Museum Curator Pete Malmberg explains what the work will entail.

“We will be mechanically digging the trench, a full cross section, of the possible tunnel feature on one side of the Dayton House.  There’s been rumors for years there’s this underground tunnel there.  We have not decisively proved or disproved that.  And we will be also digging shovel tests in the refuse dump on the slope and pinpointing where the dugout feature is.  There’s substantial rumors, in fact there are pretty much set stories that there was this outlaw with a dugout down a ways further from the Dayton Inn on the way to the creek.”

The field days will take place tomorrow from 10am until 5pm and Saturday from 8am until 4pm.
