Greene County’s football team held standout quarterback Tanner Schminke and the Boone offense in check through one quarter on Friday night in Boone, but then came the second period. After a 28-point barrage in that stanza, the Toreadors were in command and went on to a 35-8 Class 3A District 2 victory over the Rams. Boone has won five games in a row, is 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the district and in first place by themselves. The Rams are 0-6 on the season and 0-4 in district play. Schminke’s night was done at the end of the third quarter after running for three touchdowns and throwing for another. His TD runs covered 25, 35, and 15 yards, and he threw to Mason Hulse for a three yard TD pass. Kaden Sherrard opened the scoring early in the second quarter with a run of three yards. Schminke ran for 190 yards and threw for 143.

Trailing 35-0 with a continuous clock in the fourth quarter, the Rams got on the scoreboard with 4:01 remaining when senior Trey Tucker scored on a three yard run and ran for the conversion points. That capped a 63 yard, seven play drive.

Sophomore quarterback Clint Dennhardt threw for 140 yards and ran for 76 more.Tucker had a long touchdown run called back by a holding penalty early in the contest that would have put the Rams up to start the game.

Tucker also had a fumble recovery on Boone’s only turnover. The Rams made progress in the turnover department with none after turning the ball over three times in the Sept. 23 Homecoming loss to Iowa Falls-Alden.

Boone out gained Greene County 373-244. Only 95 of the Rams’ yards came in the first half.
