scranton-city-park-pic-1The City of Scranton is asking for the public’s help by showing support for a project.

City Clerk Melinda Hinners says they have applied for a $10,000 grant with the Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield Foundation to help replace and improve the city park. She says they want to replace the outdated and unsafe playground equipment at the park. The equipment is from when the playground was deeded to the City after the former school building, now community center, was shut down. As pieces break, Hinners points out that they try to mend them the best they can. Another concern is installing stakes to help keep the pea gravel in place as a safety measure.scranton-city-park-pic-2

In just over one year, they’ve raised about $11,000 of the $70,000 project. The City has received private and business donations toward the project.

A component of the Wellmark Foundation grant is by voting for your favorite project through their Facebook page. Hinners says there are over 200 projects in Iowa and South Dakota that have applied. She adds that they don’t have to win the vote, they just have to show community support. Voting is valid until October 5th and you can vote every 24-hours. The City will be notified in November if they receive funding.

Anyone who would like to donate to the project, can make their checks payable to The City of Scranton-Park Project and drop it off at City Hall. A link to the Facebook page can be found below.
