Jefferson Police DeptA Jefferson man was arrested for drugs following a house fire early Thursday.

Fire Chief Jack Williams says they received a call about a fire at 108 West Wilcox Way just before 1am. When they arrived on scene, Williams says they could see lots of smoke coming from the basement, but were able to put out the flames quickly to contain the fire to one room.

Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio that trash was surrounding a space heater that was on and caught the trash on fire, which then caught a couch on fire. No one was hurt in the incident, and the three occupants of the home were able to get out safely. The fire was accidental in nature and the only property damage was to the space heater and couch, along with some smoke damage to other items in the basement.

Following the fire, firefighters told an officer that they found what appeared to be drug-related items in the basement. The officer asked the resident who was living in the basement, if he could search it. After giving the officer permission, the officer found a marijuana smoking device and the resident later admitted to smoking marijuana the night before.

Twenty-three year-old Jackson Henry Naylor was then arrested and charged with a serious misdemeanor for possession of marijuana and a simple misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Jefferson Police Department, the Greene County Sheriff’s office and Greene County Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
