relay4lifeTeams from all over the area have been raising funds over the last year, leading up to the annual Northern Dallas County Relay for Life event this weekend in Perry.

The local event has been happening annually for over a decade and has changed over the years, from being an overnight relay in the past to a 10am to 10pm event like it is today.

Co-Chair Gary Iles says though the Relay is the largest event of the year, teams are working to help fight cancer year round.

“The last couple weeks you’ve probably been seeing purple toilets in people’s yards around town and that seems to be going really well, it’s the first time we’ve done it.  If you get a toilet in your yard it’s $10 to get rid of it, $20 you get rid of it and send it to your friend or family and for $30 you get rid of it, send it to a friend and never get it back for ‘potty insurance’ they call it.  We also had a car show up town which was awesome, biscuits and gravy out at the Masonic Home, other teams have done other things. Fareway did a roundup.  So lots of fundraisers that we try to do throughout the year.”

Iles says the goal this year is to raise at least $20,500 for the American Cancer Society.

He and Relay for Life Community Manager Katie Knutsen will tell us more about the event and how you can get involved on tomorrow’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County.
