Around two dozen students ranging in age from 10 years to college undergrads visited Dallas County Tuesday.

They’re part of the Chinese Association of Iowa and the Iowa Youth Leadership International program.

The day started with the Board of Supervisors meeting, where they learned an overview of County government and what each department is responsible for.

The group then learned about the district court system with County Attorney Wayne Riesetter, property assessment with Assessor Steve Helm, official documents, vital records and licenses with Recorder Chad Airhart and elections from Auditor Gene Krumm.

It was then time for a break as the students enjoyed lunch at Italian Villages in Adel before hearing about planning and development from Senior Planner Samuel Larson, followed by a lesson in law enforcement and tour of the jail from Jail Administrator Doug Lande.

The students come from all over China and volunteer to take part in the summer program.  They will be in Iowa for two weeks and other plans include learning about economics from several businesses and taking some time to enjoy things like the state fair, movies, fishing and amusement parks. IMG_7717
