It’s Thursday, which means time for another farmers’ market in Perry and a new program allows patrons to get more bang for their buck.
Perry is participating as a pilot location for the Double Up Food Bucks program. It’s part of the Fair Food Network Program and various markets in 18 different states are testing it out this year, including two in Iowa.
Perry Chamber Executive Director Bob Wilson says anyone with an EBT card or part of the SNAP program can take part.
“It’s just a great program. It gives you access to healthy foods. If you spend a dollar at our market, you get another dollar. So not only does it increase the access to low income families but it also increases the sales for low income families. It’s a win-win.”
Wilson says Perry was approached by Eat Greater Des Moines to be part of the program and while they’re still working out some of the bugs, Wilson says it’s a great benefit to be able to offer the community.
The Perry Farmers Markets take place from 4-7pm each Thursday, in the Perry Marketplace, through September.
