The Greene County High School Rams are playing their best baseball late in the season, which is exactly what head coach Mark Sawhill has been hoping for. The Rams will find out if their best is good enough this week when they close the regular season against Class 3A number four Saydel in Des Moines on Wednesday, then travel to Boone on Friday to take on the second rated Toreadors in a 3A district tournament opening round contest.
After starting the season with just three wins in the first 15 games, Greene County has won eight of its last 11 and will take a record of 11 wins and 15 losses into Wednesday night’s game vs. a Saydel team that has clinched the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference title and takes a 25-5 record into this week. The Toreadors are 23-6 to begin the week.
Coach Sawhill credits improvement the last half of the season in all of the keys areas as a reason for the Rams’ resurgence. “We’ve hit the ball better throughout our lineup, our pitching has been solid, and we’ve cut down the number of errors,” he noted.
The Greene County vs. Boone district tournament game July 15 can be heard around 7 p.m. on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
