Despite some common misconceptions there’s a lot more to a county fair and 4-H than just livestock.
Dallas County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Marketing Coordinator Kaitlyn Lamm says though area kids will always continue to show a variety of animals at the fair, they also have several other opportunities to get involved.
“At the Dallas County Fair kids have the opportunity to show static projects and those are in a variety of areas from photography, woodworking, agriculture and natural resources. We get a lot of pies coming in, a lot of handmade garments that have been sown. At our static exhibit judging this year, some of the more interesting things I saw were, someone brought in a 1950s baby stroller that they had refinished. So there’s a lot of different things, and pretty much it’s the sky is the limit.”
The public can take a look at the static exhibits in the community building at the fairgrounds through Sunday.
