Defending Class 3A State softball champion Solon made the long trip to Jefferson on Thursday and defeated Greene County 11-4 at the City diamond on East Lincoln Way in non-conference action. The Spartans are ranked third in 3A this week and the final score may be a bit deceiving. The Spartans scored once in the top of the first, but the Rams led 2-1 after one inning. Solon scored once in the third and twice in the fourth, but the Rams tied the game at 4-4 with two in the bottom of the fourth and it stayed tied after six innings. Solon put the hitting shoes on during a seven run seventh and the Rams also helped out with two errors in the frame. Both teams were charged with four errors on the night. The Spartans improved to 9-3 with the win while the Rams have lost four in a row and are now 6-6.
Hannah Promes took the pitching loss, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits. She issued no walks and struck two batters out.
Offensively for the Rams, Sydney Koch and Megan Carey led the way with three hits each, and Carleigh Paup had two hits. Koch had a double among her hits and she knocked in three of the Rams’ runs. Eighth grader Izzy Bravard, added a run scoring double.
Greene County is at home again tonight with Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opponent Roland-Story (Story City).
