The Greene County Historical Society is hosting June’s monthly program on a different day this week.

The program will highlight one of the most famous deaths to have happened in Jefferson in 1884. Fayette Ludovic “Yankee” Robinson was a circus owner and performer in the mid to late 1800’s. As his circus company was touring west central Iowa in 1884, the 66 year-old Robinson became ill. He stayed at a Jefferson hotel and six days later died.

Rick Morain will tell Robinson’s story. He presented the same topic in the fall of 2014 at the national convention for the Circus Fans Association of America in Clinton, Iowa. However, it will be the first time he’s told the story in Jefferson.

The event will take place this Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson at 6pm. The program is free and open to the public.

The historical society will also host another free program on Sunday, June 5th at 2pm at the museum in Jefferson called “Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower: Past-Present-Future”. It will include portrayals of Floyd and Dora Mahanay by Don and Bonnie Orris.
