c56a74e5-1e06-42ce-a21e-d34b148d9ec3As we’ve reported, an initiative has begun to restore a Civil War monument in the Oakwood Cemetery near Casey. The monument was dedicated 100 years ago by approximately 30 Civil War veterans, who by then were in their elderly years.

Casey Historical Society member Judy Wedemeyer says some of those men are buried in that cemetery and many of their descendents are likely still living in the area. “I think there probably are quite a few of them that are still around, and probably some still living in Casey. There’s a lot of the same families that have lived here over the years, so I would bet if someone traced back their genealogy they would find they probably are related to some of these men. Plus, a lot of those Civil War veterans actually grew up around here.”

We’ll wrap up our conversation with Wedemeyer today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
