A golfer from the Jefferson-based programs qualifying to play in a high school state tournament is not common, although if Rachael Danielson has her way, it will become more so. The Greene County High School sophomore plays tomorrow and Wednesday in the Class 4A Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association State Tournament in Ames at the Coldwater Links Golf Course. Danielson qualified by winning the May 23 Regional at the Carroll Country Club.
Research to date has shown Elaine Waples, who played for Jefferson High School and qualified for the 1964 and ’65 State Tournaments, is the only other female State qualifier, a period spanning 52 years. Since 1979, the only boys from the Jefferson-based program to qualify for State are Tam Green and Collin Tjepkes.
Danielson and the other qualifiers will be playing 18 holes tomorrow and 18 more on Wednesday.
