As we head into Memorial Day weekend, residents in the Casey area are taking interest in restoring a 100 year old monument to Civil War veterans, in nearby Oakwood Cemetery.
Historical Society member Judy Wedemeyer says a photo of the memorial dedication ceremony from 1916 has recently been uncovered. “What we found was a photo in our archives of the Civil War soldiers standing around the monument, which was on Decoration Day in 1916, we call that Memorial Day these days. The veterans were members of the Grand Army of the Republic, and as many as 30 of them are buried in Oakwood Cemetery.”
Wedemeyer will begin telling us about an initiative to restore the Civil War monument to its original state, today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
