The City of Jefferson has scheduled Memorial Day services at the two cemeteries in town.

The first service will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery starting at 9:30am. A firing squad will be present for a “Salute to Our Fallen Heroes” along with the playing of Taps.

The other service will be at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery at 10:45am. The Jefferson Fire Department will help raise the American flag and the Medal of Honor flag, following by the Greene County High School band playing “Salute to Freedom”. Pastor Julie Paulsen will deliver the invocation, followed by a Memorial Day address from John Thompson. The band will then perform the National Anthem, with the firing squad and another performance of Taps to end the service.

VFW Post #9599 Commander Don Ihnken talks about how he feels about being involved in the Memorial Day services.

“Oh we enjoy it. We all dress up as much as we can. It’s fun as long as the rifles all work good, we enjoy it.  Sometimes when these old rifles misfire and we’ll have only two of three guns that shoot two times, but it works. We get the job done and the families seem to appreciate it.”

Ihnken will be joined by American Legion Post 11 Commander Jim Andrew, who is also the emcee.

Everyone is invited to the free services.
