Winterset defeated Perry in the Raccoon River Conference opener for both teams 10-3 last night at the Perry Athletic Complex.  The Huskies broke open a tight game by putting together a massive 7 run 5th inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead.  Winterset sent 13 batters to the plate and pounded out 7 hits to go along with a base on balls and one error.

The game was tied at one when Winterset pushed across a pair of runs in the 4th inning on a Jayette error followed by a RBI single from Macy Johnson.  Perry scored two late runs in the 7th inning when Victoria Hegstrom smashed a 2-run home run off the scoreboard in left center field.  Rachel Kinney started the inning with a triple to the opposite field.  Perry finished with 4 hits on the night.

Regan Thompson picked up the win for the Huskies striking out 9 and allowing 2 earned runs.  Thompson is now 5-0 in her career against Perry.  Olejniczak took the loss despite striking out 9 Husky batters.  She surrendered 12 hits and 5 walks to go along with 9 earned runs.

Winterset reached the state finals last year in 4A and lost to Dallas Center Grimes in the state title game 5-2.  The Huskies return every single starter from last year’s team.  Winterset had started the season with back to back losses to a pair of top 10 5A programs losing 4-2 to both Valley and Waukee.

Perry drops their first game of the season and is now 2-1 as they head to Norwalk Friday night for a non-conference game.
