Great weather produced large crowds and the athletes responded at the 2016 Iowa High School Coed State Track & Field Championships Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Athletes covered by the Raccoon Valley Radio Network placed 20 times including winning two titles.

ADM Senior Maggi Bjustrom won the Class 3A 100 meter hurdles in 14.74 seconds. It was the first individual title for Bjustrom, who entered the race with the fastest qualifying time. Bjustrom anchored the Tigers to a fourth place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay. She was joined in the relay by Kylie Hauf, Kristen Baier, and Sami Schepers. ADM’s girls also had two eighth place finishes. The 4 x 800 meter relay was eighth with Anna Kenny, Elise Mueller, Sadie Juergens, and Briana Mueller, and the 4 x 400 was eighth with Kenny, Juergens Olivia Anderson and Brianna Mueller.

Greene County sophomore Megan Durbin won the 3A high jump at 5′ 5″ on fewer misses over two others, who also cleared that height. The Greene County boys had a fifth place finish in the 3A 400 meter low hurdles from senior Daric Whipple.

In 2A, Panorama’s Morgan Johnk finished in seventh place in the 100 meter hurdles for girls. Gabe Richey placed twice for the Panorama boys. He was sixth in the 400 meter dash and eighth in the 400 meter low hurdles.

Also in 2A, Asani Abdullah of Woodward Academy was fifth in the boys’ long jump.

Class 1A athletes had 10 top eight finishes led by the Guthrie Center girls who were sixth or higher five times. The Tigers were second in the 4 x 200 with Rachel Rummelhart, Jennifer Fuentes, Mady Fuller, and Savana Fuller. Freshman Savana Fuller was the second place finisher in the 200 meter dash. The 4 x 100 was third with Fuentes, Rummelhart, Mady Smith, and Savana Fuller. Also placing third was the sprint medley relay of Smith, Rummelhart, Fuentes, and Savana Fuller. Rummelhart was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles.

Nodaway Valley had five events place including two second place finishes. Jared Corder was the 800 meter run runner-up, and the NV distance medley for girls was second with Sadie Marnin, Rachel Scheel, Kenna Lundy, and Destiny Scar. Scar closed her high school career on the blue oval with four top eight finishes in four events. In addition to the relay, Scar was eighth in the 800 meters, seventh in the 1,500, and fifth in the 3,000 meter run.

Raccoon Valley Radio aired a series of reports on all three stations for all three days.
