A West Central Valley girls basketball coach is facing possible unemployment after leading the junior varsity team for 19 years.
Bob Hasty expressed disappointment with the School Board Wednesday night, after finding out they were considering not renewing his contract by a text from Activities Director Tod Broman, instead of a phone call or other official form of notification.
The Board’s considering eliminating Hasty’s position due to a possible drop in student-athlete participation in the sport, decreasing the amount of girls basketball coaches from three to two, head coach Drew Stonewall and assistant coach Alexa Groff.
Hasty says coaching basketball is one of his great passions in life and he considers the girls he has coached over nearly two decades to be like daughters to him. He adds he would be devastated and feel betrayed by the Board if he was not able to coach the sport anymore after giving so much time and effort to the program.
Head coach Drew Stonewall spoke on Hasty’s behalf, saying Hasty’s presence adds much consistency and benefit to the team and the program could suffer without him.
The Board tabled the decision on Hasty’s contract until their June meeting.
